The São João Festival of Campina Grande: Why a Family Office Chose a Forró Party Over a Resort

There is a question worth asking before any group retreat: what do you actually want people to feel when it's over? Rested, yes. But also something else. Something harder to name and harder to manufacture at a resort where every surface is designed to eliminate friction, surprise, and the particular discomfort that precedes real conversation. The family office that brought this question to EG Experiências already knew the answer. They just needed someone to build it.

Why Campina Grande

The São João Festival of Campina Grande is officially called O Maior São João do Mundo (the Greatest São João in the World). It is not a tourism product it is 33 days of celebration in a city transformed from the ground up, with thousands of hours of music, gastronomy, and culture concentrated in the Parque do Povo.

The Parque do Povo spans 42,000 square meters in the center of the city and, during the festival, becomes a true scenic city with the sky covered in bunting and historical buildings of old Campina Grande recreated as living scenery.

In 2025, the festival drew 3.2 million people and generated over R$740 million in the local economy, with 96% approval ratings.

When a family of executives leaves a climate-controlled boardroom and arrives in the middle of a 43-year-old popular festival, something shifts. Barriers that resist every exercise quietly dissolve. People talk differently, they laugh more... they'll remember the night for years.

This is not an accident, it is the psychology of shared displacement: the phenomenon in which genuinely unfamiliar environments deactivate social performance and activate connection. EG Experiências designs around that principle.

The criteria behind the recommendation

When the family office came to us, the brief was clear: no resort or no generic spa retreat. An experience that would create lasting memory and that, in some measure, represented Brazil as it truly is. We applied three filters:

Authenticity The state is where the family originally comes from. That distinction mattered because it was the difference between watching a culture and being briefly welcomed into one part of your life.

Cultural immersion There is no passive observation at São João. The music finds you. The dancing invites you. The food is eaten standing up, in the street, with strangers who become temporary family. Immersion here is not optional, and that is exactly what makes it work.

Comfort without insulation EG Experiencias does not place groups in the crowd without structure. The rawness of the festival remains intact. The logistics do not.

What the group experienced

The itinerary EG Experiêmcias built centered on five days in Campina Grande during the first days of the festival, with an extension into the Brejo Paraibano the elevated, lush interior of Paraíba that very few visitors have ever seen. Bananeiras, 45 kilometers from Campina Grande, sits at the top of the Serra da Borborema with a serene climate, historical architecture, and a food and hospitality scene that has been deliberately built around discerning visitors. The Estação Bananeiras: a 1925 railway station converted into a boutique pousada and restaurant, with suites featuring private ofurôs and a veranda breakfast typical of the Brejo is one of the finest small hotels in the Brazilian Northeast.

The group:

  • Attended the main stage celebrations at the Parque do Povo the epicenter of the festival

  • Had a private dinner curated by EG Experiências with regional Paraíban cuisine: baião de dois, queijo coalho, carne de sol, rapadura and aged cachaça from a working engenho

  • Traveled to Areia, a city with over 420 listed historical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, for a morning of architecture, engenhos, and slow time

  • Stayed two nights in Bananeiras, waking to mountain mist and birdsong at an altitude no resort itinerary would think to offer

  • Visited Cabaceiras known as the Roliúde (Hollywood) Nordestina a city that has served as the backdrop to some of Brazil's most iconic films, including O Auto da Compadecida

On the last evening, seated on the veranda of the pousada with the Serra da Borborema cooling the air around them, the family did not talk about succession.

Who this product is for

For groups who have already been to the obvious places. Who understand that Brazil is not Rio de Janeiro and a caipirinha at sunset. Who are looking for something that cannot be replicated because it belongs, irreducibly, to one state, one people, one month of the year.

EG Experiências works with groups of 6 to 14 people for the São João experience. The 2026 festival runs from June 3rd to July 5th, with the peak concentrated around mid-June. We recommend securing dates at least five months in advance.

How EG Experiências operates this

EG Experiências manages the full journey: flights into Campina Grande, air transfers between cities, accommodation across the city and the Brejo Paraibano, all curated meals, bilingual cultural specialist guides if needed and a direct line to our team throughout.

We do not simply place groups at the festival. We compose an experience around it and one that holds the energy of São João and the silence of the Serra da Borborema, in the same itinerary.

Plan your retreat

The São João of Campina Grande happens once a year. So does the kind of shared experience that changes how a group of people understand each other and the country they thought they already knew.

If your organization is looking for something genuine, we are ready to talk.
